What's on Your Bookshelf?
Professor Tula Goenka
Associate Professor in Television-Radio-Film at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communication
Q: What are you currently reading for pleasure?
A: have a very short attention span these days (probably due to ADHD caused by social media) so I tend to read 2-3 books simultaneously. Currently, I am switching between The Reluctant Fundamentalist by Mohsin Hamid and Manifesting Change: It Couldn't Be Easier by Mike Dooley. I also have The Bhagavad Gita: A Walkthrough for Westerners by Jack Hawley always on my bedside table.
Q: What appealed to you about this book?
A: My friend, director Mira Nair, is in pre-production for the film adaptation of The Reluctant Fundamentalist right now, and I thought I better read it! But seriously, it is a politically relevant book and a haunting read for someone like me who constantly straddles two worlds and cultures.
As a filmmaker first and foremost, I am a great believer in the idea that one can manifest one's visions into reality, and Mike Dooley is always an inspiration.
Q: What is next on your "want to read" list?
A: A life-long friend recently gifted me The Second Half of Life: Opening the Eight Gates of Wisdom by Angeles Arrien. I look forward to reading it next. Like many others of a certain age, I am in the sandwich generation caught between aging parents far away, young children needing constant attention and a fulfilling but demanding career. Some guides to balancing these and still finding for my own sanity would be helpful.
